January 21, 2011 at approximately 22:17, Ptl. Merrell was dispatched to
Westview High School, located at 8457 Hwy 45S, to an attempted suicide.
Upon arrival, the male subject was not at the school, but his vehicle
was located at the Martin Recreational Park. Ptl. Merrell and Ptl.
Gallimore were following the offenders footsteps from his vehicle
towards the pavilion. At that time, officers did hear a gunshot from
the pavilion area. Ptl Merrell and Ptl Gallimore then began to
approached the pavilion with caution. While approaching, they
observed the offender on his knees with a rifle to his mouth area
approximately fifty feet to the right of their location. Ptl. Merrell
made contact with the offender advising him to take his finger off the
trigger of the rifle. The offender yelled over and over again for
officers not to approach him. Ptl. Merrell then stopped approximately
twenty five feet and continued to try to talk to the offender. The
offender then began pulling the trigger over and over again, stating
why is this not going off. Ptl. Dolack then walked behind Ptl. Merrel
and advised him to keep offender distracted while he could move in
behind him to use the taser. Ptl. Merrell then observed the offender
pull the bolt back on the rifle and eject a spent round and chamber
another bullet. Ptl. Merrell then deployed his taser and once the
offender moved the rifle away from his body to look at the bolt region,
Ptl. Merrell did taser the offender in the torso area. Offender did
fall to his stomach and he was taken into custody. The rifle was taken
into possession by Ptl. Pryor and logged into the armory. Offender was
transported to Volunteer Community Hospital for evaluation. Offender
